RMI HAS MAJOR ROLE TO PLAY AT AUTOMECHANIKA JOHANNESBURG

The Retail Motor Industry organisation (RMI) will play a big role at Automechanika Johannesburg, which takes place at Expo Centre, Nasrec, from May 6-9. Firstly it is facilitating the finals of an automotive skills competition, then it is hosting a vehicle safety imbizo and thirdly the RMI has arranged an extensive programme for a conference on the morning of May 9.

The finals of the skills contest involve three disciplines: panelbeating, spraypainting and automotive technology (motor mechanic) with the winners going to the WorldSkills competition in Brazil in August.

The safety imbizo will examine various aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair which can have an influence on causing collisions.

The conference on Saturday has a blend of international and local speakers. The visitors are Dave Rowley, the South African Education Programme Director for the Bloodhound supersonic car project, and Dr Paul Spear, of the UK Institute of the Motor Industry. Rowley's topic will be: "Why design a car to travel at 1 700km/h? Making science, maths and technology exciting in the classroom," and Dr Spear will talk on an "Apprentice ROI calculator – recipe for employer rewards."

The local speakers will be Peter Nel, of Midas, Charles Robinson of PMI, David Kramer of Sci-Bono (Mathematics and Science) and Dr Florus Prinsloo, of the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The event will close with the prizegiving for the winners of the skills competitions.
